Following the Taoyuan Pilots’ Union securing the legal right to strike on January 22 and its announcement of potential strikes during major holidays, EVA Air and the Ministry of Transportation engaged in intensive negotiations. On January 28, EVA Air agreed to additional salary increases beyond last year’s adjustments. Monthly salaries will rise by NT$13,500 for captains, NT$11,000 for senior first officers, and NT$10,000 for first officers. The company also agreed to raise salary progression caps for first officers and senior first officers. The union celebrates this success, achieved through solidarity and collective strength.

EVA Air has historically maintained a tough stance toward labor negotiations. Reports suggested the company was unwilling to compromise and even considered using the strike as an opportunity to undermine the union. Regardless of the speculation, EVA Air showed no goodwill before the strike vote passed. However, faced with an overwhelming 90% strike approval rate, the airline conceded to union demands in just six days—proof that unity delivers results. This is a victory for labor rights!

The nature of pilots' and seafarers' work is strikingly similar: both work offshore and face challenges in organizing unions across borders. Yet the Taoyuan Pilots’ Union has shown that determination can overcome obstacles. Their unified action sent a strong message to employers worldwide.

This success also highlights that seafarers need solidarity even more than pilots. While pilots hold highly skilled positions, all EVA Air pilots work under indefinite contracts, whereas most seafarers in Taiwan are bound by fixed-term contracts. Pilots fought for labor conditions beyond legal requirements, while many seafarers still lack even basic protections under labor law. If seafarers stand together, we too can have higher wages, improved benefits, and better working conditions.

Let’s strive for the next wave of labor action, starting with China Steel Express!
